Shell Eco Marathon
Role
Head Aerodynamicist
Dates
Aug 2022 - Present
Shell Eco Marathon is an international competition focused on energy optimization. As Head aerodynamicist, my main design objective was to reduce all kinds of drag as much as possible. Our car's concept involved generating the body completely based on airfoils, which many past teams have done. To do this, the design was separated into 4 stages:
Airfoil Analysis and Selection: In this stage various airfoils were studied, taking into consideration Cl, Cd, Cl/Cd, angle of attack and their thickness avoid modifying a lot to fit the chassis and pilot.
Basic Geometry Simulation: A basic geometry was then created by extruding a profile on a side view and another one on the top view. These geometries were then analyzed in SolidWorks Flow simulation to obtain a Cd estimate.
Body Sculpting: After a few airfoil combinations were selected, the body was sculpted over the chassis, steering and pilot using forms in Fusion 360.
Ansys CDF: Having a mock body, a Fluent simulation was made to verify its performance.
